Disney theme parks in the US will now have apprentice fairy godmothers instead of fairy godmothers. This is necessary so that men can also play the role of fairies, Disney representatives told CNN .
It’s about theme park workers dressing up children as princesses and knights at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. In these boutiques, actors in disguise turn children into iconic Disney characters through makeup, hair and costumes.

Previously, actresses dressed as the fairy godmother from the Cinderella cartoon were engaged in such reincarnation. These characters will now be able to be played by men thanks to a redesign as the title of Fairy Godmother has been changed to Apprentice Fairy Godmother.

As noted by CNN , the decision reflects Disney’s broader efforts to update its parks to make them more inclusive. In particular, the company wants to change the approach to the appearance of its park employees.

Last year, Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro said the company would provide “greater flexibility” in its actors’ outfits in regards to “forms of personal expression related to gender-sensitive hair, jewelry, nail styles and costume choices.” The parks will even allow actors to show off their tattoos.
