Madrid, September 22 (EFE) – Madrid wants to promote cultural tourism in the capital through one of the attractions of this segment, the theater.
For this reason, the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the representative for culture, tourism and sports Andrea Levy, the representative councilor for tourism, Almudena Milo and the president of the Association of Producers and Theaters of Madrid (Aptem), Jesús Cimarro, were in the campaign this afternoon in the Plaza del Callao. This promotional initiative, which emerged last year to contribute to the recovery of the Madrid theater scene, is now back to boost the sector and encourage the arrival of new visitors in what will be a “historic” theater season.
The mayor, who was present with Madrid producers and actors such as Josema Yuste, Santiago Urialde, Luis Piedraita, Magui Mira or Natalia Milan, assured the presentation that “Madrid is not understood without our performing arts, without our theatres”. And expressed “infinite gratitude” to all the actors, “to those on the table, in the office, in the stagecraft, in the changing room, to all those responsible for the execution of the function”, a press release highlighted by the Consistory.
Martínez-Almeida explains the value of this art for the city of Madrid. “Thanks to the great world of theater, Madrid is a leading city in the world”, and he recalls that “we are the fifth world capital in theater, the first capital in the world in musicals in Spanish and only this season we have twice the number of musicals in the city of Madrid compared to 2019”.
After considering that “we cannot understand Madrid without culture, since culture is the air that we breathe in this city and it allows us to move from day to day”, the councilor encouraged people to “take part in any excellent theatrical or musical production that we have in our city.
The City Council, through the delegated area of tourism and in collaboration with Aptem, promotes this campaign that highlights the great theater agenda of the capital, full of unique proposals that can only be experienced in Madrid.
This season includes 22/23 of the city’s “best theatrical offers in history”, all kinds of productions, 13 large-format musicals and hundreds of stage titles, reinforcing Madrid’s image as a tourist, cultural and leisure destination. Musical entertainment and world capital in Spanish.
The ‘Come to the Theatre, Live Madrid’ campaign will be broadcast until November 1 in the Madrid region and its three main national tourist centers of Barcelona, Valencia and Seville.
According to Aptem, the six great musicals that took place in 2019, the year before the pandemic, had a total of 1.6 million visitors, which means a turnover of 109.7 million euros.
In the 22/23 season, the Madrid stage agenda will be full of great theater events and shows, with musicals as one of the main attractions, thanks to productions that have just been released or are about to arrive, such as ‘Malinche’,’sing under the rain’,’matilda’ either’never ending story’; Others are grouped as ‘the lion king, with over a decade of experience in the city; And those that are yet to come, such as the premiere of ‘Aladdin in 2023, among others.
