SAN SEBASTIAN, September 22 (EFE).- Of Cristóbal Balenciaga it can be said that everything is known about his work as a master of haute couture and almost nothing about his personal life. In one and the other, directors John Garano, Aitor Arregi and José Mari Goenaga investigated the creation of the main character “with respect and rigor” in their first series for television.

The project is being developed as an original Disney+ production, tackling its first locally produced series and starring actor Alberto San Juan as the titular hero of “Balenciaga,” which will have six chapters, premiere in 2023, and whose latest additions include musician Alberto Iglesias. That is.

The structure of the San Sebastián Festival served this Thursday for the presentation of this project directed by the directors of “Handia”, a film that received ten Gaia awards, and “La Trench Infinite”, which won two, and also participated by the Basque producer Javier Barzosa.

Together with all of them, they participated in the act, which took place at the San Telmo Museum, Sofia Fabregas, Vice President of Original Productions of Disney + Spain; co-writer and creator, Lourdes Iglesias; and costume director Bina Daigeler, who led a team of 30 to faithfully recreate the designs of a master who touched perfection.

The three directors adapted to different cinematographic periods to shoot over sixteen weeks—with two weeks and two nights still to go—the life and work of this Gipuzkoan, a fisherman’s boy and a seamstress from Getaria, who are part of history. Fashion and that’s what they wanted to go beyond the “biopic”.

“We maintain balance. We have imagined certain episodes of his life and gone hard on what is known about him. But you have to see yourself reflected in the character,” explained Goenaga.

With Alberto San Juan they continued “a negotiation process” until he “made the character his own and contributed to its layers.” “He gave us a sense of intimacy, of Gipuzkoanism, he understands it well,” they said of the Madrid interpreter, who speaks in Spanish, Basque and French in the series.

The actor confirmed this. “Of course I have a close relationship with him. It’s the person I’ve connected with the most in the last four months, more than any flesh-and-blood animal,” he said.

“We are very comfortable with the psychology of the character, it appeals to you, it speaks to you. Our Cristobal is a person who is frustrated by the lack of control”, added Arregi, who also assured that they have complete freedom and the series Going to be the same as they would have filmed, even if they didn’t have the support of Disney+.

Garano, for his part, explained that they worked as a team in the same way they do on their films, although the idea was that two directors would work on each chapter. “It’s proving more complicated and ultimately we’re all getting into everything,” he added.

Alberto San Juan also mentioned the scope of this production, who has never worked on a project “of such magnitude and in so many ways” and where he is, “above all, very well directed”.

“It was the scale, I was so overwhelmed that I had to behave like a loyal, disciplined soldier. This was my way of being able to survive and continue at the pace, it was needed, absolutely dedicated to the team”, he comments about this role. did, which for him was “an absolute gift of life”.

San Juan wasn’t the only option to give life to Balenciaga, but it was the one placed “on the primary grid” after testing, Aregi noted.

The documentation work was complete, they read and watched everything that existed about Balenciaga and got the cooperation of their “maison” in Paris and Mirren Arzaluz, fashion designer expert and director of the Palais Fashion Museum Galleria. French capital.

At today’s presentation, the costume director commented that they told him he was too serious. “I don’t have time to laugh,” said Bina Deigler, of her team’s technical efforts to study and reproduce the master’s designs, which were then joined by couturiers such as Christian Dior and Coco Chanel, who also appear in the series, as does Belgium’s Fabiola.
