Madrid, September 22 (EFE).- Newsrooms from 60 publishing groups in Spain with more than 140 titles will start this Thursday to offer a selection of their content through the Google News Showcase. This is a new service that will allow current information to be disseminated through the Google News and Google Discover services
Through this initiative, the technology giant established an online content program under license that allowed the media assembled in the showcase to select and present the news they thought would be of greatest interest in a panel along with their headers and brand image.
Since Google News Showcase launched globally in October 2020, more than 1,700 media outlets from twenty countries have joined the project.
Journalists from participating media create and select information on their screens, which direct readers to the full article on their respective web pages.
The public can access the panels through the Google News news aggregation website—on Android, iOS, and web devices—and through Google Discover on Android and iOS.
Google News Showcase compensates media financially for their content
Each media outlet featured in the Google News Showcase has signed a separate license agreement with Google, compensating multinational news organizations financially for a limited amount of access to the content they create.
Sources at the Mountain View (California)-based organization highlight the power that news editors have to select “quality” and “more relevant to users” content presented on a panel with their own headlines.
Regarding the economic terms of contracts with information companies, the agency says the contracts will be “the fairest and most equitable to each publisher” based on their contribution. It emphasizes that the criteria shared with the titles that will govern the content will be to increase the quality of current information on the Internet with relevant and current stories to reach “more citizens” and “well-informed”.
The same source warns that compliant media must respect Google’s policy on misinformation. No remuneration will depend on the visibility or not of each news item. This means that low-quality content with a hook to get more visits (known as “clickbait”) “doesn’t impact the economy.”
Since the global launch of Google News Showcase in October 2020, more than 1,700 media outlets in twenty countries have joined the project, according to data from Multinational. They include Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, Colombia, Germany, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Portugal, Italy and Argentina.
Google News has returned to Spain after an eight-year absence
Google News resumed activity in Spain last July after a hiatus of nearly eight years and to coincide with the project’s twentieth anniversary. At the end of 2021, the European Copyright Directive was transposed into Spanish law by royal decree.
That reactivation means that publishers who adhere to the News Content Policy can appear on Google News and other aggregators.
Each editor can negotiate their terms with Google to reactivate their news aggregator, which has been criticized by organizations such as the Federation of Journalists of Spain. It claims that the talks with the tech giant will be done not individually, but through a joint entity.
