The government released a report after the incident, which occurred at 1:05 p.m. (6:05 p.m. GMT) on Monday, less than an hour into national exercises held every September 19 to commemorate the 1985 and 2017 earthquakes, which took place on the same date and are said to be the most destructive in recent history. The head of Civil Protection reiterated that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.7 with its epicenter 63 kilometers south of Colcomán, Michoacán, with a depth of 15 kilometers.

For this reason, he explained that “after the first damage assessment visit conducted by the authorities of the three levels of government, it is possible to detect the greatest impact in the states of Colima and Michoacán.”

In Kolyma, it reported 153 damaged houses, 20 buildings due to structural damage, two damaged temples, seven damaged medical units, five damaged bridges and eight road collapses.

While in Michoacán he listed 30 affected schools, 21 medical units with structural damage, churches affected and roads collapsed.

More than 3,600 elements of the armed forces have been deployed in the affected states, Velazquez added.

The official said that “considering this is a high-magnitude earthquake of magnitude 7.7, there is not much risk of damage.”

“We deeply regret the two deaths in Kolyma state, but the impacts on personal structures as well as infrastructure are minor and will be resolved in the shortest possible time,” he said.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted minor damage and coincidences with earthquakes of the same date in 1985, when about 20,000 died, and in 2017, when 370 died.

“The loss of human life, even two, is unfortunate, but it did not happen to adults. Just as you can say: what’s unfortunate that on the same day at the same time (the earthquake happened on September 19), look at the other: what’s lucky that it didn’t happen to majors,” he said.
